When I first started my wellness journey it was around 2009.  I was teaching high school math, I was the math department chair, I had 2 children in elementary and going into high school, and I was exhausted.  I had no energy.  I worked all week and went to bed as soon as I got the things done that had to be done each evening. I would spend entire Sunday afternoons sleeping.   Everyone would talk about shows they were watching or books they were reading and I was so exhausted there was never time for that.  Every few weeks I would have to take a sick day just so I could sleep all day.

I don't remember now how the conversation came up but my then principal was also a naturopath.  He had gone back to school to become one because he had experienced aluminum poisoning that almost killed him.  He shared his story of his health journey, and now how he has learned how to use natural and homeopathic means to help others as well. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain to become his client and so my journey began.

When I began going, I knew nothing about nutrition except the food pyramid you learn in school and another diet that I had success with a few years before to lose the weight I had gained in college, Dr’s Clinic 30 Program.  It was very strict with portions and actually required that you consume a set amount of dairy and bread carbs each day.  Even though we grew a large garden every summer growing up, we ate cereal for breakfast and had bread at dinner nightly.  We regularly snacked on ice cream and cookies, and tried every food trend that came out in the 80s and 90s, from low fat, to canola oil, to the Splenda craze.  I took a sandwich, chips, a juice box, fruit, and a dessert for lunch to school everyday for as long as I can remember.

At my first session he introduced to Muscle Response Testing (also called Applied Kinesiology) to determine weakest or sickest areas of my body and the foods, immune problems, chemicals, metals, or scars that were affecting them.  He encouraged me to eliminate dairy, wheat, and sugar from my diet immediately and we began the work on my small intestine.

I had experienced problems with my ‚Äústomach‚ÄĚ from time to time since I was about 7.¬† Certain foods, especially pizza, would¬† wreak havoc on my intestinal track.¬† I also had a ‚Äúnervous stomach‚ÄĚ about all kinds of things for as long as I can remember.¬† I kept began keeping¬† a food journal and took the whole food supplements and homeopathic cleanses that he recommended that my body needed to begin to heal itself.¬† Elimination diets are becoming more popular now but this was my first exposure to the idea that the¬†standard American diet (ironically called SAD) is actually causing most typical Americans (and now people all over the world) big problems with their health.¬†

Even though it was right before Christmas, I was tired of feeling so bad and I implemented all his suggestions immediately.  I had also weighed the most I had, but once I stopped eating bread, sugar, and dairy from my diet, the weight just began to fall off.  Within a couple of months I weighed what I did in high school and everyone was asking what I was doing to lose weight.  Through keeping the food journal I learned that certain substitutions, such as soy milk for cow’s milk, was a bad idea due to soy containing estrogen like compounds that could cause problems with my thyroid.  Over time I also learned that while bananas are a great food for many people, their high sugar content was causing my blood sugar to spike.  It was causing me to have terrible cystic acne knots on my chin almost constantly.  I had gotten in the habit of putting one in a smoothie for breakfast each morning, in addition to other fruits, not knowing anything at the time about glycemic index and how it was affecting my body. While I was in the process of fixing some problems, I sometimes unintentionally caused others.  I was learning that improving my health was going to be an ongoing process and a life quest. Since then my naturopath has continued to learn and incorporate new effective protocols into his practice to facilitate allowing our bodies to heal themselves.

I began to get so many questions from everyone and was constantly telling them what I had done and was doing to change my health for the better.  When the opportunity presented itself I decided to get trained first in Energy Testing and Muscle Testing Methods, then as a Functional Nutrition Coach (since nutrition was such a huge part of my journey), then as a Wellness Coach, and finally as a EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practioner becasue emotions play such a huge role in our health and EFT is good for everything!

I want for others the gift that I have been given. To be able to learn how whole foods and avoiding the foods that irritate our bodies, how beneficial supplements can be for our health, what clean health and beauty products are best adn how to use essential oils to enhance our health and well-being, and how taking care of our emotional selves changes our health.

The goal of this site is to do just that.  To educate, to inspire, to inform, to make you want to question and investigate everything and make your own informed decisions.

If you ever need a hand or have ay questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,

Melissa Barronton
